Streams in the Desert

Providing care and support to single mothers, widows, and orphans.

This ministry is on behalf the widows and orphans in the Negev of Israel, called Afikim BaNegev or Streams in the Desert. God has given Streams in the Desert a heart to serve those often seen as the poorest and neediest in our midst, the single mothers and their children. God's desire is to cover them with His love, protection, provision, and care. This ministry began with a vision to help single mothers, but it was quickly discovered that effective ministry to single mothers also involves working with their children. Thus, this ministry evolved with a dual vision and purpose to help and strengthen whole families.

Needs of single mothers often prove to be complex and ongoing. Afikim BaNegev seeks to provide spiritual, emotional, and practical support to these women with the goal that they will be assisted, encouraged, strengthened, and, finally, empowered to function independently. Our outreach to single mothers includes:

  • Financial assistance in times of crisis or special need
  • Liaisons to government assistance programs
  • Job training, career development, start-up of small businesses
  • Counseling, parental guidance, support groups
  • Discipleship and spiritual encouragement

From small beginnings, with a few activities for the mothers with their children at holiday times, Streams in the Desert's outreach to children and youth has now expanded to encompass a wide range of programs throughout the school year and during holiday times.

  • After school activities
  • Hiking and camping trips
  • Summer camp
  • KISI (musical theater productions)

We believe when people engage in service, it leads to life change. Our short-term trips provide opportunities for people to serve together in various locations around the world. Our belief is that as people chose to serve, whether in one of our churches, in the local community, or around the world, the impact of that service will change lives—for those serving, for the people they serve, and even for those that see them choosing to give their time to help someone else.

For those of you who have not gotten involved, we hope this will be the year you choose to begin a lifestyle of service. And to those who are serving, we just want to say thank you. You are the reason the mission is being accomplished.
